Browning Sweet 16 questions
I inherited a Browning Sweet Sixteen, I don't know a lot about firearms like this and I need some pricing advice. What are they worth? I have looked at many that are for sale online, and I'm only now figuring out which details make one worth more than another. I would like a practical going price on this particular one, I would like to sell it someday or at least insure the thing along with the rest of my items but I don't where to start. I've looked at a recent bluebook, but it is of course just a bluebook and doesn't always reflect the true market or all of the myriad details in this near-ancient Browning design.
The serial number is most peculiar to me, appearing in front of the loading gate on the bottom of the receiver as it should be for a Belgian, but it is an "A" followed by only four digits.
Here's the description as best I can do - 16 ga. 2 3/4 in. chamber, 27 1/2 in. Vented rib barrel. Original buttplate. Gold plated trigger with some wear. Round pistol grip shock. Blueing is excellent save for freckling the receiver. Barrel is awesome and unmarred. Stock and fore end are in excellent condition, however there is a small crack near where the forearm meets teh receiver. The barrel is Belgian marked. The serial # on the receiver is A 40XX (couldn't date it properly from the Browning web site.) Full choke barrel with one "*".

That serial # is indeed a puzzlement!
If, indeed, your Sweet 16 was made by FN and not Miroku, it was made between 1950 and 1976.
According to the latest Blue Book, a vent rib (FN) Sweet 16 is worth:
80% = $700
90% = 825
95% = 9500 -
Weird huh? I am sure that it is not Japanese, however. As I'm certain that it was acquired by its previous owner (relative) before 1976. The only serial # profile that it matches up with is the wartime American wartime manufacture era. Where a 16ga serial was preceded by an "A". But the # is not on the side of the receiver like on other US manufactured A-5s. 0
