1865 Savage Saddle Rifle
I have a 1865 savage saddle rifle with saddle holster the stock has a aninmal hide on it.would anyone know the value. thanks

Iam with the Capt. on this one. Savage made a model 1895 as well as a model 1899, maybe you misread the date? Also, Spencer made a model 1865, so maybe you misread the name? Iam not familiar with the term "saddle rifle" as any rifle carried on a horse is a saddle rifle. Why don't you go back and look at the rifle again and give us everything that is written on the barrel and receiver, plus a short description of the overall firearm and length of barrel so that we know if we are talking about a rifle or a carbine. Remember that we can only see this gun through your eyes. If you give us a good description someone here will be more then glad to help you. 0 -
ARTHUR SAVAGE`S first patent was granted in july 1887 to protect a PEABODY-MARTINI rifle with a tube magazine in the but. prototypes were made in .45-70 and .44-40, but the hinged block style actions were unsuited to magazine feed. they did produce a hand full of "saddle ring" or "cavalry"carbines.
SAVAGE REVOLVING FIRE ARMS Co. had a military primary long arm contract. made in MIDDLETON CONN. c. 1862-1864 with some parts and stock guns beind assembled after production in 1865 and 1866. the total quantity was 25,520. the lock was marked with a federal eagle motif/U.S. and SAVAGE R.F.A Co. / MIDDLETOWN. CON. to the right of the hammer. the date is stamped to the rear of the lock. they produced a small quantity of "ARTILLERY" models. they were .58 cal percussion muzzleloading rifled muskets.

Thanks for the run down on Authur Savage. I didn't realize that he had worked with Peabody. I can see how a Peabody swinging block action would have problems feeding from a butt stock magazine. I think that this was before the Swiss, Martini, got into the act. I did know about the Civil War contract,but somehow didn't think that the percussion musket was the gun being asked about. However,could be wrong, have been before. Scout0 -
I have all the same information as Mr. Mike...Probably from the Same source....I'm just hesitant to say anything until I know just what we're actually talking about....Still want to see a Photo and a detailed discription.....its peaked my couriosity for sure....
