Where can I define the markings on a German Mauser. I notice a lot say mod 98, mine does not, the bolt on mine also comes straight out, not curved down towards the stock, hence no notch in the original stock. Is there a book where you can look up the different markings?

You have a G.24(T) substitute standard German WWII rifle. Scarce, so don't sporterize it. Worth blowing a couple of bucks on Law's "Backbone of the Wehrmacht" just to interpert the markings. Luftwaffe used this weapon quite a bit. Worth a few hundred fer sure.

So this is not a model 98? What model is it, a model 24?

    Well, yes it's a model 98 like a DC3 is a C47 or a KC135 is a 727. Same guts, just a different paintjob.

98 Mauser made by WAFFENWERKE BRUNN A.-G.,
Werk Pov.Bystrica...'dou' is the "s' Code given to this Company so as to keep the Manufacturer Secret....In decent shooting condition this Rifle would be a desirable keeper in stock configuration...I hesitate to place a value upon it...as Its going to be worth more to you because of the known History thru your Father's bringing it back to the States as a Trophy of War......

My offer to swap a car was in jest to give some idea of the value. It should not have been taken seriously. Me thinks sometimes a person can be given too much information. Piquing a persons interest may be preferrable to relating information soon forgotten or ignored.
Once a fellow gave me a mounted 8 lb bass to hang up. I did not catch it myself or have anything to do with it until it was already mounted. It stayed up for about a week. Seeing it did inspire me to go and catch my own big fish.
Hopefully you will have a burning desire for further study and possibly a whole new field of collecting. If for no other reason than to have a link with a point in time that your father was a big part of.
    Good luck in your quest.
