Steel bullets, Shoot em or Swap em??

I ended up with two 20rd boxes of Russian 223 with the 62gr copper plated steel bullets. The 223 bbl I have is not the greatest so should I just use them up or burn them up ??

  They are not going to hurt your barrel if you shoot them, that's why the copper's there. They were designed (if you follow the Army's lead with the SS109 round) for penetration, and I would make sure you had a good backstop. Am I wrong anybody.

  Awhile back I bought 1000 pulled 147gr FMJBT bullets. They all show pull marks. About 2/3 are this copper plated steel. I have had very good results with them from my 1903 springfield and M1 Garand. Mind you they aren't match bullets, but benched at 200 yards I kept them all at least in the 8 ring of an official NRA 200 yard target. The same gun will keep them all in the 10 ring with match grade bullets, but they are great for plinking, and yes for the heck of it I did fire one match with them... I didn't win but I didn't lose. I say shoot em!

  Gilding metal clad steel jackets have been a standard alternate in US military small arms ammunition for 60 years. If there were a serious problem, that would not be the practice. Most Continental European sources use steel-jacketed bullets for 90+% of their loadings. Not, as Jon noted, Match grade, but plenty good enough for casual shooting.
