Hello

Does any one have this book that could look something up for me on an old Model 3 (New Model) ? I cannot find it locally and I need the info kinda quick. Thanks

  I am looking at a Smith & Wesson New model N0.3 . I have been told that it is a .44-40, but there are no markings to that effect. Serial # is in 3 digits. It has the longer cylinder I know that of the approximately 2,000 made , 700 were converted to .44 russian. How can I tell if this is a .44-40...should it have markings as such.. Did any have caliber have markings? How were the converted .44 russinas marked? Will .44 russian bullets fit in a .44-40 or vice versa? Does the Jinks book have anything to say about any of this?

  Ref. S&W Standard Catalog, page 55: "To distinguish .44 American from .44 Russian cylinders, remember that American cylinders will be bored straight through while Russian cylinders will have a sharp shoulder where the case mouth rests". I just checked mine and the shoulder is quite noticable.
