Why a ported barrel?

Looking to get a new shotgun barrel, and I was wondering what the advantage is to having a ported shotgun barrel, versus a non ported. Thanks for any replies.

  it helps with muzzle flip so you can get a 2nd sight picture quicker
  and its LOUD as hell

  I personally do not like porting because of the noise. I had a 45/70 guide gun that was ported and traded it for one that was not ported.
  Of course I am speaking in hunting situations.
  
  With that said, if you are going to trap shoot with you shotgun and use ear protection then it might be a good thing because it will allow a quicker second shot.

  I've seen some compensated rather than ported barrels on shotguns. The ported barrel reduce muzzel climb, but doesn't effect recoil much. The compensated barrel does help with recoil and climb, but usually are not on semi-auto's.
  
  I used a ported pump and was amazed how much control it gave.
  
  Measure twice, cut once.
  
  Empty the clip!

  I had my Browning Citori skeet shotgun sent to Larry Kelly at Magna-Port/Pro Port and it appearred to reduce recoil. The main benefit I found was the reduction in muzzle rise. You may want to check their site at: www.magnaport.com

  Top Line porting does a real nice job and has a unique teardrop porting style. I does a good job with recoil and muzzle jump.

  it all basically comes down to weather or not you can handelv the recoil actually i love the recoil the harder the better [}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][:D]

  If you are a clay target shooter and shoot doubles, the porting helps to keep the barrel from raising for the 2nd shot.

  IF YOU ARE GOING TO GET AN OVER AND UNDER SHOOTING THE LOWER BARREL FIRST WILL HELP CONTROL MUZZLE RISE NICELY. AS FOR RECOIL GET A RECOIL REDUCER.

  I find porting lessens the felt recoil AND the muzzle jump considerably. Yes, it's louder on a rifle but it's not the same thing. A bullet comes out of a muzzle going a whole lot faster than a wad and shot. The physics are different.
