Red Dot off a pellet gun.

I have a Walther cp99 with a red dot scope. Can this scope be used on the 9mm P99?

  In most cases,,,,no. The scopes and lazer projection sights, (red dots) made for use with airguns, will not stand up to the recoil forces of of any firearm, with the exception of .22 rifles. BSA, Simmons among others make red dots for center fire pistols and rifles that are reasonably priced and work quite well.

  Python; Correct me if I'm wrong, I also heard that a scope made for firearms could not with stand the recoil of an airgun as well.Because a firearm recoils backwards and an airgun recoils forwards. I was told that if you want to ruin a good rifle scope then put it on an airgun. Any truth to this?

  have seen many "rifle scopes" blow out and returned becasue of beeing mounted on high power air guns

  trsmith5: what you've heard is correct , i have a nephew thats into high dollar air guns and thats what hes told me several times

  Answer is yes, and no as to red dots sights be used.
  
  Spring piston pellet guns (usually break opens)can easily destroy most scopes.
  
  Upon release, the spring piston flies forward pushing an air charge & pellet. When it reaches full stroke, it pauses for a micro second,.....then flies-bounces violently backward. While this is happening, high frequency vibrations are running thru the gun like a large tuning fork.
  
  Compare it to sitting on a rocking horse, rocking violently back and forth at speeds up to 30mph.
  Your neck is the scope reticle & internals [xx(]!
  
  Other problems are cheap rings, and/or poor installation. Also, high mountings which can work absolutely require stronger & better materials.

  The scopes made for spring action airguns have threads that are backwards. Recoil normally keeps the parts tight but the reverse recoil on the airguns will loosen the parts on a normal scope.
