RUGER RIFLES
co-worker asked me about them I know the hand guns but no idea as to how good the rifles are..said he was looking at a 30-30 but i did

What is so bad about a Ruger rifle. It seems like the more people I talk to about ruger rifles, the more they don't like them. I've owned many Ruger rifles and I have never had a problem with them in any way. Would someone let me in on why they are disliked.BT 0 -
Well, you might not like my answer but here it is. I needed to put
Tru Glo sight on the front of my Ruger 10/22 because I could not see that little gold dot front sight much anymore. I tried it myself and nicked up the old sight and front barrel. I took it in to a good gunsmith (realizing I didn't know what I was doing) He put on the new sights (front and rear), removed the scratces I had put in and charged me $40. One of the smartest things I ever did
if it's beyond your competence hire someone who knows how to do it right.

The front sight band is a press-fit, and also is held in place by a set screw.

no, i have done look for a set screw,didnt see one,i want to take the band off,to fit a weight,i shoot it in competition and would like to lose the band if i can,

Sounds to me like you were a good candidate for a heavy stainless barrel anyway. I am not sure why you would want to affix a weight to the end of your barrel. I do know that front-heavy guns seem to be more stable (at least for me). I can't remember what company it is, but one of them makes a barrel that fits the factory sporter barrel channel without modification and is a heavier barrel from the front of the forearm to the tip of the barrel. If you'd like more info, I'd be glad to look through my magazines and find it.

Are you talking about a 10/22, a 77/22 or an M-77 or what? The front sight base on a 10/22's and 77/22's (standard) barrel is an intregal part of the barrel and can only be removed by cutting about an inch off the muzzle end of the barrel and re-crowning the muzzle.[xx(]
The M-77's and MKII as well as the Ruger #1's have a band type front sight base that is a press fit with a set screw under the blade. It can be removed, but will require refinishing of the muzzle end of the barrel, as these guns are blued with the sight base attached to te barrel.
