Ruger 77 MkII
I just purchased a new Ruger 77 MkII 7.62x39. Using Russian hollow point ammo at 100yds. 3 shots in X ring ,1 shot on line 6 o'clock 10 line, one shot middle of 9 at 9 o'clock,one shot in 8 ring at 8 o'clock.
At 60 yds. one shot in X ring, 2 shots at 12 in 10 ring, 2 shots in 10 at 4 o'clock, and 2 shots in 10 at 8 o'clock.
Would any of you know if the rifle should shoot better than this and if so would another ammo be better and if so which.
Your comments will be appreciated. There was a lot of visible residue noticed in bore after shooting.

The Ruger may have a .308 dia bore. Standard 7.63x39 ammo is .310 or .311 depends where it is made. Try contacting Ruger and see what size bore the rifle has then match the ammo to the gun. 0 -
I would try some better ammunition and see where the first shot(cold shot) hits. Shoot two more and let it cool the barrel. Then repeat the process. 0 -
I count 6 shots at both 60yds and 100yds. Did you let the barrel cool down? Were the first 3 shots the ones which went into the x-ring? If they were, then the rifle shoots just fine, the barrel just got hot. If not, and the barrel was allowed to cool, I would second the advice on buying a box of bullets that cost more than $3. Try to find a premium offering from one of the major ammo manufacturers.

You didn't mention if you cleaned the gun or not, even new guns should be cleaned before firing. This might be the residue your seeing. I would also suggest trying some other ammo, the surplus ammo is great for plinking. You have a nice gun, that I would be really surprised if it didn't shoot!

I'd keep putting that cheap ammo thru it till a couple hundred later you clean it then try the good stuff. It takes a while for the new barrel to break in use the cheap stuff. 0 -

I have to second the opinions on the ammo.
I suggest trying some Winchester USA ammo.
Hopefully it will shoot better.

Sounds fairly impressive for the type of ammo you're using, but were the targets for 25 yard bullseye pistol or for 600 yard hi-power rifle? There's quite a difference in the size of the X-ring in different size targets, ya know? [:0]

I'm surprised that no one knew that shooting .311 ammo in a .308 barrel might give results exactly like the ones he got! I shoot the Russky stuff in my sks or AK; never in my mini-14 or any American made guns.
I own 3 MKll Rugers in 300 Win Mag.; .223 Rem.; and 7.62X39 and have never shot that poorly at 100yds. with any o them!
Perhaps a flinch or pulled shot accompanied that first flyer....unless you're shooting from sandbags fore & aft, some minor mis-alignment could occur.
How windy was it that day? (alibis anyone?)
