Which headspace guage?
Which headspace guage do I need after I take out the barrel for my Savage 110 and put in a new one, the Go, No-Go or Field? Do I need all of them or can I just do it with one?

Bolt should close on a GO gauge. This is the minimum chamber length.
Bolt should not close on a NO-GO gauge. This is the maximum chamber length.
Field gauges are even longer than a NO-GO and your rifle should never close on a FIELD. The military, during heavy combat, will allow a rifle to stay in use until it closes on a FIELD. By than the lugs are so beat back into the receiver that they scrap the whole gun out (beyond repair).
On your Savage, you can get by with only a GO gauge and some Scotch tape. If the bolt closes on the Gauge alone, but won't close on the gauge plus tape, your good to go.
This is a feel thing, DON'T force it. If you have access to a gunsmith in your area, ask him to demonstrate the use and feel of the gauges.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Go & No-Go,
I have done several for friends, and I use a method that works for me, but I do not suggest you use it for obvious liability reasons, I have them make up a dummy round with their dies and use that dummy round to set the headspace, just insert the dummy round in the chamber and slowly ease the barrel back against the closed bolt and dummy round until it touches,I do not use any other pressure just solid contact, and then snug the barrel retainer nut with the wrench, that seems to work great, good accuracy and nothing but neck sizing needed for subsequent loads.0 -
Tailgunner1954, where did you put the scotch tape on the guage?
Jody Commander, does that process work with factory ammo? I use a full length resize die for my 30-06, I reload for a couple different rifles.

I suppose if you were to use the same factory ammo all the time it would work fine, but by using a round resized in YOUR die, you headspace to your reloads, not just any ammo, if you are to be using many sources of ammo, buy or borrow the Go and No-Go guages and use as directed. 0 -
Between the gauge and the bolt head.
The idea is to lenghten the gauge by a few thousanths, if the bolt won't close on it than your within specs. for the cartridge.
With your Savage you use the GO gauge instead of JD's dummy round, after tightining the nut and double checking for closure with the GO gauge, add the tape to verify that your headspace isn't excessive (bolt should not close at this point).
Having both gauges is the best way to go, but as I don't know the size of your piggy bank, so I suggested a way you could be safe and save a few bucks
