Prices of Vari-x II vrs. VX-I Scopes

I've been watching auctions on Gunbroker & eBay and noticed that used Vari-X II scopes are usually selling for more than new VX-I scopes. What is the deal? They are basically the same scope. I realize that the Vari-x II line had more options (finish, reticle, etc.) but I just don't get why someone would pay more for a used scope than the same one, only new. What am I missing? Is there something that makes the older Vari-x II better than the newer VX-I?

  I own a set of Parker Hale 1200s in 7mm mag and 30-06 that I set up with identical 3x9 40mm VX-IIs. I recently purchased a 25/06 Parker Hale and found the VX-I the only match available in the current line and I can't tell the difference.

  Value is a perception. The value of what I have in my hand is what you will give me for it. Generally older scopes (not collectable ones now, but "shooters") are valued at less than the new price. If, howver people are willing to pay more, for whatever reason, a dealer is not going to turn it down. Buyers may not be informed as you are, or dealers may be waiting for one that is not.
