Norinco MAK90 legal stock conversion?
Picked up a Norinco Mak90. Thumbhole stock atrocious. If I were to change the stock by sanding and filing the thumbhole into a more usable thumbhole, or removing the damn thing altogether and leaving a pistol grip-type stock; would I run afoul of the ..." MAK90 not to be modified except by classll manufacturers in special cases"...wording that I read on a Tapco catalog?

You can legally convert the MAK-90 to a pistol grip stock by reducing the number of imported parts to 10 or less. The magic number for a MAK-90 is 5, this can be done in a number of ways ... The US parts avaiable are:
1. Hammer
2. Trigger
3. disconnector
4. Gas Piston
5. Mag Floor Plate
6. Mag Follower
7. Stock
8. Handguard
9. Pistol grip
On my Mak-90, I replaced the stock set itself with a US made Birch set which counts as 3 parts; Stock, Pistol Grip and Handguard (the handguard, even though its actually 2 parts only counts as 1). Then even though it was one more part than I "had" to have I replaced the fire control group; Hammer, Trigger and disconnector (this lowered my imported parts count to 9) ... if you want to have a lot of mags its cheaper to replace the FCG than replacing all the Mag Floor Plates and Followers plus you don't have to worry because you can use any mag.

KimberKid is right. I had to put a "made in USA" pistol grip stock on mine. I also changed all the fire parts (trigger, hammer, disconnector) with "made in USA" parts. It is a nice looking firearm now. 0
