Jennings J-38
I am looking for a small, inexpensive, 380acp. Does anyone have information on the Jennings j-38? When I said inexpensinve that is the operative word, but is the Jennings too cheap? Any other suggestions would be apprecited.

The Jennings is probably to cheap and probably not a good value. To me, value is the most important issue when purchasing anything. I would look at Kel-tec, Kahr, CZ, Ruger they are all a pretty good value and won't hurt your wallet to bad. Ruger has several models of 9mm, a round that is very reasonable to shoot.

Not worth the price, no matter how cheap it is. They are junk, unreliable and should be avoided. JMHO based on the unintentional
ownership of a similar model by Jennings......Jam-a-Matic Turd at best.

Look for a Makarov in 380. It'll be under $200 bucks and will be a good quality piece. Jennings are made almost entirely from cheap zinc alloy which doesn't take the stresses involved in a firearm well. 0 -
Save up and buy the absolute best gun that you can afford. If you buy the cheap Jennings you will only regret it a little bit down the road. If you are looking for a relatively less expensive but reliable small gun take a look at the Kel-Tec P-11. It's 9mm, but no bigger than your average .380 and retails new for about $200. Used would be even less. I would be very leary of trusting your life to a Jennings.

The Jennings can be a fine offensive weapon ... but only if you can accurately throw it and hit your target!

I might be in the minority, but I love my Bersa Thunder 380. I paid $240 NIB for the duotone model. Nice little shooter. Inexpensive, but not "cheap."

I have only heard good things about KetTEch guns,and they have a .380 coming out soon.I'm waiting for that one as I have the stuff to reload it.Otherwise I'd get their 9mm.....may do so anyway.

No chance that I'd contradict the others and suggest that the Jennings is a pistol worth buying. You should know some of the problems I came across when we tested a number of these little pistols several years back. The pistol is made of cast zinc and was less than pleasing to the eye- it looked cheap right from the start. There were tool marks all over the gun and the black painted finish (Jennings called it TEFLON) was spotted and flaking off and remember, this was a new in the box pistol.
The metal to metal fit was fair but there was so much play in the slide that I thought the pistol had been damaged. Picture the most worn out 1911 you have ever handled and that is how much side to side play the slide on this pistol had brand new. The stocks (grips) were some of the most uncomfortable I've ever felt and there were a few nasty sharp edges that need to be filed off before we could shoot the thing. We measured the trigger pull at an amazing 15 lbs (single action only) and the shape of the trigger itself made firing the pistol very uncomfortable.
The pistol disliked EVERY brand of ammo that we tried to feed it- nothing but stovepipes- and hollow points were out of the question as they simply refused to feed at all. When the pistol did decide to occasionally fire it was fairly accurate but the sights (a groove in the frame for the rear and a simple blade up front) were just awful since they were finished the same color as the slide itself and simply disappeared right before your eyes. All and all I would not suggest buying this particular model pistol under any circumstances. I also suggest that you purchase a Makarov- they too have their faults, but nothing like the Jennings. These are simply my personal experiences and opinions with this Jennings pistol and others may feel differently...although that would indicate to me that they know NOTHING about firearms!

Just thought I would mention the North American Arms 380. It's a little more expensive than the others mentioned here but i feel is a great little shooter. probably looking at around $375 for it so i'm not sure if that is in your cheap price range. JMHO

Please stay away from Jennings! These guns should only be given to thugs and crackheads, so when they try to use them on law abbiding citizens they will blow-up in their faces...[}:)] 0 -
