It sounds like you collect .22mag. So eventually you will have both. The question is which one do you want now. I have a BRNO .22mag that breaks down for back packing and its a semi and I love it. So I would go with the semi over the pump. The semi gives you a quicker second shot if one is needed. My 2 cents

Do NOT buy the Remington 597 in .22mag they have had troubles from the beginning with these guns. Shells do not feed right, trouble with clips either plastic or metal. THese are well documented problems also not just one or two guys.
ALso the Ruger 10/22 mag is back out now after a 6 month hiatus of problems. I would stay away from semi's in mag caliber. Marlin discountinued their semiauto .22mag. I think there is a trend here.

I too haven't heard good things about the 597. I would sure think about the Ruger 10/22 also - they are great guns.
My brother-in-law has a rossi pump. It is a good gun and hasn't ever given an ounce of trouble, however it isn't the most accurate thing. His is 22lr and is the model based off of the old Winchester pump that is very slender and has an exposed hammer. I'd trust the rossi, but for $175, that would go a long way to covering a 10/22...

It doesn't matter what you shoot, just shoot it well...

the rossi pumps are nice....i'm not sold yet on the ruger or remington semi's...i did see a real nice taurus in 22 mag and also .17 rim...sure is funny how people are saying the 22 mag is dead..noway...i'll take my 22 mag at 100yrds any day...i am also though in the process of getting a 17..but the 22 mag is here to stay!!!! my two cents tom

The ruger 10/22Mag is about $300. I have a 3 day guarantee on both the guns and I was assured from the original owner that the 597 functioned fine and it was traded in on a 17HMR. The Rossi pump appears to be unfired and was traded in on a handgun.

rballi, the Rossi you mention is the Model 62 SA. Mint condition(100%) they go for $185. They are fun for plinking with. Or it could just be me, I love pump guns.[:p]

The Ruger 10/22 mag is $305.00 dealer wholesale for new. If the one he has is used it is probably from the first run of these they had all the troubles with .

I bought the Rem.597 22mag last year. Its in the closet gathering dust
while I,m carrying a Savage .17 HMR bolt action.Like I said on another post, for accuracy there's no comparison. But if you already have 22mags don't try a .17HMR it'll make you want to get rid of them.
