The 17 Remington has been around for several yeras. If you are talking about the rim fire it is new. Go to the Marlin web site, they have info on it.

The new rimfire round you been hearing about is the ".17 HORNADY MAGNUM RIMFIRE" it's only been out little more then a year and been taking off like a rocket.
All the major manufactures are building rifles for it now, and they can't keep them in stock.
Click on this link from "OUTDOOR LIFE" it gives you the skinny.

Right off the bat the major "Pro" is that the ballistics and performance of the round is too sweet to pass up.

The major "Cons" are availibilty of rifles in the chambering, (many dealers have them on backorder), that the .17HMR is not reloadable (it's rimfire ammo) and the ammo costs more than .22Win Mag, right now in my area the ammo is about $8.50 a box of 50.

That article probably tells when it was released, but I think it was in the Fall of 2001.

Lets start with the Ruger .17 caliber Rotary Magazine Bolt-Action Rifles. They propel the .17 at over 2,550 feet per second, more than 25% faster than the .22 Magnum. Here's your choices.

    1. Model 77/17 Blued Alloy Steel with Walnut Stock.
    2. Model 77/17 Varmint in Target Grey finish and Black Lamenated Stock.
    3. Model 77/17 Blued Alloy Steel with Synthetic Stock.

Now lets check out the Ruger Model 96 Lever-Action Rifles.

    1. 96/17M Standard Tip-Off Scope-Mount Base. 54% Throw Lever.

Want a little bit of Cowboy action? How about the New Model Single-Six Revolver?

    1. NR617 Blue w/Rosewood grips, adj. sights, 6 1/2" barrel.

    Hows that for choices?
Ruger should hire me as a PR man.

i own a ruger 77/17 and this thing is unreal makes a 22 mag look like a BB gun the accuracy of this gun is unreal 200 yards and i was hitting 10 ring every shot would be good for just about any kind of hunting that is legal the hornaday bulllets are ballistic tips so they are to me a little more explosive than a hollow point as for getting one i had to drive 90 miles to pick mine up but it was worth it.i have seen remington now has a model 597 semi auto in the .17 looks nice wonder how it shoots? if you get one you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED (shotgunred)

The Hornady.17HMR makes .22 mag obsolete. i've got both and theres no comparison. And the price of .17 ammo will be coming down.
