Weapon firing from open bolt

Can someone explain what it means when a weapon fires from an open bolt?

  This weapon picks up a round,chambers, and fires when the bolt closes. The bolt is held back by the trigger mechanism. When you pull the trigger the bolt flies forward. Some have an inertia firing pin.They are very simple in operation in full auto but require avery heavy recoil spring.

  Most submachine guns (firing in the automatic mode) and some machine guns fire from an open bolt. What that means is that when the weapon is cocked ,the bolt is in the rearward position. When the trigger is pulled the bolt slams home and the guns fires. On some guns they have a fixed firing pin. It helps in the cooling of the gun and so there are no live rounds in the chamber to cook off when the gun is hot.
