Best 270 Win. Ammo?
This past deer season I switched over to a Remington 700 in 270 for deer. I have been hunting in the woods for a while and have always shot a 30-30 with a 170 grn bullet because all shots have been 100 yrds. or less. I hunt in a different area now where 200-250 yard shots are not uncommon. I got the 270 and am very impressed with the accuracy of the ammo I am using. I am using Hornady 140 grn. BTSP. I have made good shots on the deer , but they seem to go farther after the shot than before. One, I shot at 125 yrds. left little blood and was not found. I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on a better deer round. One that has good performance.Thanks.

I have had very good performance with Rem. 130 gn. core-lokt ammo, but better with my loads using Nosler 130 gn. Partition bullets.

I also shoot a .270 in Kentucky for whitetails, have always reloaded Nosler 130 gr. Ballistic Tips, and have had great results, Federal and Rem. load factory ammo with this bullet, this year I broke my trend and switched to Swift Scirroco's 130gr., connected on one this year but did not recover bullet, shot was right under 200 yds, and the bullet performed well, I would recommend both bullets! I use the 130 gr. nosler ballistic with 58 gr. of imr4831 on mule deer and elk and have had excellant results.

Try the winchester 150 grain silver tip. it will suprise you. It will do the job.
(All calibers are good as long as long as it is a 270. )0 -
I agree with zip. been using silvertips for years in my browning bar 270. If they do run off , there is usually a dam good blood trail!

If you are loading your own try the 150 Nosler Partition, if not I think Federal is loading them. If your gun will shot them well they are about the best 'all around' load there is.

Hey guys ...i've owned a .270 a long time, i also reload,thru the years i've run into the problem as Smitty,what i'm guessing is the jacket thickness on the bullet, what i've done is slow the FPS down to 2400.it has a Much Better effect on the drop ratio, i know what your gonna say , if ya' hit'm rite they all drop [not so true w/ the 270] the one they don't walk away from is Marlin .35 cal loaded w/200gr bullet an 4064 [under 90yrds] twice i thought i mist,they dropped so fast. Now if you don't reload go with ZIP.. hes got the rite bullet the Silver Tips , they do do the job, well thats my 3cents , everyone to there own Happy Shooten. an good luck Smitty--Mr Gee 0 -
Like mkr12162, I to have switched to the 130 Gr. Swift Scirroco's that Remington make. They have more Velocity at 400 yds and more energy at 400 yds than some of the other factory loads. you can find some ballistic charts on the websites for Remington, Winchester, Federal, and PMC. However, I have also heard good things from guys who shoot Hornady's. But I am not sure what tip or what grain, the only thing is that they left an exit wound as larger or larger to a silver dollar. Check how Winchester 130 grain Power Points shoot with your rifle. They open up quickly and do a lot of damage, not to metion they aren't as expensive as some other factory ammo. Just my opinion. 0 -
Try the Winchester Fail Safe rounds and you will never look back.
We have tested several rounds in the .270 caliber because we all have .270's (4 of us) and found the Fail Safe to shoot the best groups as well as have the most knock down effect on white tail. Man what a hole it leaves.0 -
I did use remington core lokts 130 grain. But switched over to winchester super-x silver-tip or power point 130 grain. The winchesters showed much much better groupings at 100 yrds. Every deer I have shot so far, I have dropped using remington core lockts and the winchster super x. If your shooting around 150 yrds or more, I wouold go with the winchesters. Great bullets and not too expensive.

Ya I would go with the winchester power point or silver tip 130 grain, basically the same. With the core-lokts you never know where its gonna go.
