history of 25 Rem. Auto Rifle?
For the Remington historians out there. My friend has his Dad's Rem. Auto Rifle. Clearly marked Model 81 "Woodmaster" Ser. #9XX. Rem site states only Model 8 was made in 25 Rem. Clip is not removable. Could this be a transition piece or special order. Rifle is still in good working order. Serial number is only 3 digits and is found matching in 2 or three places on weapon. My friend knows rifle was bought new in 1935 he thinks. Almost forgot, rifle is in 25 Rem but can't find caliber listed on weapon anywhere. Any info. is appreciated. Thanks; Joe B.

Dear Joe B: The Model 81 Remington Autoloading rifle was listed in .25 Remington in the June 23, 1936 price list supplement, a sales brochure from 1936 and in the 1936 Stoeger "Shooters Bible". .25 Caliber was not listed in 1937. It is generally thought that either no .25 Remington Model 81s were made or that only a very few were made. The major expert on the Remington Model 8 and 81 Autoloading Rifle, Mr. John Henwood, 819 Linda Mar Blvd, Pacifica CA 94044 says he has only heard of two Remington Model 81s in .25 Remington and has never seen one himself. I would suggest you write Mr. Henwood a letter detailing you gun's information. He will be interested. If he ever revises his book "The 8 and the 81" you might get your gun in his book. There are also collectors of Remington Autoloader Rifles who may pay a premium for an authentic Remington Model 81 in .25 Remington caliber. What is the production code on the left side of the barrel where it joins the receiver? Should be two (or possibly three) letters (DE or EE?) 0 -
The blue book has the 81 Gamemaster listed in .30rem,.32rem,.35rem or .300 Savage then says add 20% for .25cal. Then this quote at the bottom of the listing "The .32rem cal was dropped after WWII and the .300 Savage
was added in 1940. While a few specimens have been observed in .25cal, it is probably the result of part swapping as the Remington CO. cannot verify this caliber". Hope this helps !!0 -
The 25 Remington cartridge is the same in every respect as the Winchester 25/35, except one, it is rimless like the 30/06.
i.e. all case dimensions are the same (except Rim). All bullets are the same size, weight, diameter. All factory ballistics & realoding information can be use for both. Realoding dies are the same and can be used for both(except shell holder).
Same info applies to 30 Rem. & 30/30 Win., 32 Rem. & 32Win. special.
Be Advised 25Rem Ammo or empty Brass is very very hard to find!!!$$$$$

It is correct that .25 Remington and .25-35 are ballitic twins. And while there are many similarities between the two cartridges, the case dimensions are not identical. All you have to do is hold a .25 Rem. up next to a .25-35 and see the differences. It's not just a rimless .25-35. The .25 Remington has less taper in the body and the shoulder is set further forward than the .25-35 WCF. My model 8 is stamped .25 on inner barrel- reciever end. Just seems like four years ago I seen .25 rifle shells at cabellas. Still have three boxes of old ones left.

Cabelas online store--- rem .25 shells -- 39.99 per box-- have to be back ordered 1 to 2 weeks to get.
