old colt 22 age?
I have had a police positive target .22pistol that i've had for 18 years. I don't know what is worth. I would be interested in buying another one, but i don't have any idea what the fair price is. I just can find them at gun shows. I would like to know the age of the one i have. The serial # is 38811. thankful for any help

The Police Positive Target Model Guns were made from 1910 until 1941. There are two common called Models of this gun, the Model G, made from 1910 through 1925. The Model C was made from 1925 through 1941, the end of the production of these guns. The Model C was a "Heavy frame type" 6 inch revolver. Calibers available were not only the .22 LR, but the .22 W.R.F. Model 1890 Rifle Cartridge when Stamped for this caliber, and .32 Colt, also using .32 New Police, and .32 S.&W. Short and Long Cartridges. Surprisingly, the .32 Caliber versions of these guns are worth much more than the .22 LR chambered ones.
Your Serial Number indicates this gun was made about the middle of the run during the year 1930, and would be a Model C. There was 2,100 of the Police Positive Target Revolvers made in 1930. The 1931 Models began at serial number 38900.
Condition is the most important factor in determining value on these earlier Colt revolvers, so it would be impossible to assign a definite value to your gun without knowing its exact condition. If your Gun was rated at 10% condition, it could be worth as little as a couple hundred dollars. Should it be 100% condition, then quite possibly it could be worth somewhere in the neighborhood of about $750.00. Interestingly enough, if it was a .32 caliber, it could be worth as much as $1,000.00 to $1,100.00, depending on your potential Buyer's desire to own it. This is because the .32 caliber was scarce and not common in the Police Positive Target Model. Hope this helps!

Privacy is the No. 1 reason given. However, other than the fact, you are making the fact that you own such a gun with such a serial number, public knowledge, there is little anyone can do with a serial number. You could, I suppose, check to see if stolen using the information given. Not much use to anyone other than that which I could think of. Some folks don't want "Big Brother" to have any opportunity to know about anything they might have, control, or own. Obviously, you might be taken at your word such as in the case of asking about "my gun with serial number....." Most folks substitute "X's" for the last two or three digits of the number.....leaving some doubt as to what the real complete number is.
Just an after thought, many Publications that advertise guns for sale in a Classified Newspaper format, will have the complete serial number of many of the guns being advertised. Generally, a serial number could be used to confirm the Model and Date of Manufacture of many guns.
