Winchester 94 Takedown
I have a Winchester Model 94 Takedown in 30 WCF. It has a 22 inch octagonal barrel that appears to be a factory barrel. This is a rifle and according to all of the books I have looked at it should have a 26" barrel. Anyway, any idea on the value? It is about 70% overall with no cracks or dings in the wood other than a bunch of notches that I assume are deer or other game kills. The Winchester book says the gun was made in 1909. George Madis's book "The Winchester Book" go's into some depth on non standard rifle barrel lengths. I had a 20" rifle made in 1904 and I could never authenticate it. I am at work now and don't have the book, but it says that "most" short rifles had a shorter forearm. About an inch, 8 3/8" instead of 9"+. It also went into how the barrel address was placed and where the magazine rings were placed. I think they said one in thirty thousand were ordered with shorter than 26" barrels. Also I heard that those years records were destroyed by fire so that they can't be lettered. I got a lot of mixed opinions on my rifle. An awfully lot of them were shortened by gunsmiths and blacksmiths so it is very hard to say if it is special ordered. If you can prove it, it is a very desirable rifle. HTH
