Winchester Model 12 Trap stampings?
I was wondering whether anyone knew if the original Winchester Model 12 Traps were all stamped with the word "TRAP" or if any were sold without that marking.
Thanks

Hi.
Hardly any of the Model 12 were maked trap. The way to tell if it is trap grade, is by the proof marks, on top of receiver, and barrel. If you can see the proof marks, and they are not covered by rib,you have a trap grade. If you can't see the proof marks, and they are covered by rib, you have a field gun some one has installed, a after market rib. In other words, the proof is on top on field grade, and off set on trap grade. There is nothing wrong with a built up field grade, but should be less expensive, than a true trap. The mark, that i'm calling proof marks, is a small ovel, with a P,with a W stamped on top of it. It is more of manufacturing mark than proof mark.
Hope this helps.K.J.S.0
