S&W generation difference

All Smith & Wesson pistols with four-digit, and some with three digit (such as 910, etc.), model numbers are Third Generation. The square triggerguard was a feature of the early Third Generation pistols, and soon gave way to the two styles of rounded triggerguards (a "long" and a "short" oval shape). Your pistol is an early Third Generation. If your pistol were a Second Generation, it would be a Model 659.
