high-dollar or custom made 1911
I am looking at wilson, les baer,and ed brown but my gun smith tells me these guns are still lacking.polishing of chamber, trigger job, reliability overhaul and a few other things of this sort. He recommends that I have one custom built. Any input on this subject.
I guess What i want to know is do you guys think these high dollar guns are worth the money?
I have 1911s but one more could never be bad, could it?

I've looked at the Wilson Super Grades's....pretty hard to improve on these. Proven for feeding and reliability, come with custom fitted mags....after that it boils down to finish & appearance features. They're a lot of money, but I think well worth it. Don't kow what your smith could do to a trigger that Wilson doesn't. 0 -
Any machine can be improved on.None are perfect,but i dont think a average smith can do a lot to these 1911,s.maybe mess one up,You say you own several different 1911s,do they shoot well?What are you looking for in a custom 45?If you dont shoot well now you wont shoot any better with $4000.00 gun.If you want one to just have one because you like them,then get one.Its a head trip more then anything.And its alot of fun to own one.Also you could take one of the guns you own now and have it customized and get a super gun for the same money, maybe a little less.and have the gun built to your spec.s.You didnt mention Kimber they have custom guns also,very nice 45s.Randy W. 0 -
I've got a Wilson KZ45. I love it, the quality is outstanding, and for 1K I think it's quite a bargain.

I rank my Kimber Custom Classic as a best buy. I also have a custom 1911 made on a Safari frame ($1000) and it is excellent (IMHO). I am skeptical of your gunsmith's comments. Like others have stated, I think he wants work. 0 -
I have to go against the grain. I'm sure all mentioned are wonderful guns, and even though they may be limited production, they are still a production gun. Talk more with your smith. Let him show you some of the differences. Maybe you have a large hand and a double stack gun would fit better, maybe a medium size and a single stack with a speed bump grip safety would be best. It's about getting exactly what YOU want, instead of what Kimber or Wilson thought you might like the best. Pick your sights, pick custom cuts on the frame and slide, pick all the parts! If your smith is a custom builder, he should do a much better job than any production maker.
I learned after we built our house, that for another 10% I could have had custom kitchen cabinets. We didn't need them, the stock cabinets are fine, but the custom cabinets are WOW! As suggested above, let your smith build up a gun you already own if you're not sure. you can save some money, and you can have the work done in stages.If you have the money, go for it! Good luck

Baer et al produce a custom gun using production techniques. They have models that they "produce" but the making of that gun is essentially a hand fitting and tuning. They can be further customized if you desire.
The advantage of a gunsmithed gun is that you can literally select all the pieces. This doesn't make it better, but you can more finely tune what you have. My Colt 70 is very customized, but I'd be just as happy with a Baer or Ed Brown. You have to know a lot more to get something better from gunsmith. I planned my gun over a period of years and I'd still probably change a couple things now.
