alternative to colt python
I like the .357's credentials and I'm interested in getting one as a field back-up, home defense etc. all-around handgun. I like revolvers. Don't know if I can afford a Colt Python. Any suggestions for a more affordable alternative?

I recently picked up a Rugar security six for I belive 225.00. Real stout gun adjust sights very acurate w/wadcutters.

As mentioned above the Smith 686 is a good gun, but if you need a field back-up, the Smith model 19 or 66 are good choices. They are lighter that the L frame models, but still shoot .357 mag ammo.
I have 2 pythons, a 4" and a 6", and love them. If you really like the python, save up a few more bucks, and check the auctions.0 -
686 S&W is really about the best production gun--you are typically talking maybe a couple hundred bucks more to land a Python-depending on condition, model, barrel, finish etc. For self defense, it's not really worth the difference, but I think for range/hunting it would be worthwhile.

I will also throw in my vote for the S&W 686. I have a 6" model that I am comfortable with in the woods either as a back up or a primary gun for whitetail hunting. I would also not have a problem using it as my home defense gun also.
I love my Python but do not shoot it as often as the 686 as it is more of a Cream Puff and I am trying to keep it that way. My 686 is the work horse .357 in my collection...

The Python Elite is one tough gun,and super accurate.The action is smooth as polished glass,trigger breaks at 2.5 lbs.Nothing handles like the snake,I would recommend you choose Colt on this one.Smith629 0 -

Agree with all posts above, but if dollars is a real issue and you want solid construction and willing to give up some accuracy take a look at a Ruger GP-100, .357 Cal, Stainless steel, 6 inch barrel.

How about a Dan Wesson. You can pick up a good used DW for around $250 or so. And then atleast you have the ability to change barrel lengths as seen fit. 0 -
Ive got a 6 inch GP100 that will keep up with my 6 inch Python all day long. just as accurate, and only took a brief visit to the gunsmith to get the trigger smooth and crisp. 0 -
Go with the Ruger it will last longer and is just as acurate as any colt and a lot better quality. You can shoot hot loads if wanted. Go with a Ruger all the way. The colts and s&w are not made near as well as a Ruger and will deterate where as Ruger holds true.

Never shot a Ruger that could hold a candle to a Python in the accuracy area. At least that has been my experience.....

I wont say my ruger is better made than my Pythons, nor will I say it shoots better. It is just as reliable however, and hits whatever im shooting for. Will it keep all 6 shots in a hole the size of a quarter at 50 yards? probably not. Will my Python? Not with me shooting it, altho I will admit it can keep a tighter group than the Ruger. Difference is tho, I paid a whole lot more for the Colt than i did for the Ruger. So when you consider the price difference of the two, then yes Id say that when you compare dollar for dollar the Ruger shoots as good as the Colt. Did that make sense to anyone other than me? 0 -
Axlerfan, I see what you are saying. I have a different slant on the subject. I have a Python and a Ruger Security Six that are both fairly old. The Python is circa 1976 and the SS a few years newer. Guess which one held it value....and then some.
Mr. Grey, if money is the only consideration, buy a Ruger...If you can afford a Smith, it is well worth it, better trigger etc. A Python, well everyone needs at least one...JMHO...[:D]
