Some 32 S&W Long & 32 H&R magnum questions
How 'bout them Bucs!?
I haven't been on in awhile and as always I want to thank you for your help ahead of time!
After a long try out period we found that the best all around pistol for my wife's hand is a S&W "J" frame. I picked up a perfect Model 31 in 32 S&W Long. Instantly I'm getting all kinds of advice about having a Gunsmith bore out the cylinder (it's a late model) so it will chamber H&R 32 Magnum.
I know about the danger of too much pressure....and I also realize this gun is nifty in it's original state....Sooooo, what say you[?]
Nice gun show in Brooksville, Fl. this past weekend!

Hawke..... I would leave it as is. The gun is so small it would probably not be able to handle the extra pressure, could be dangerous.
The .32 S&W long can generate up to 12,000 cup or (copper units of pressure).
The .32 H&R Mag goes up to 21,000 cup, which is higher than the .38 spl +p ammo. This would probably blow up your little gun and your wife would not like that.0 -
You can load the 32L to 1000fps which will sting the hand a little.
It's an Elmer Keith load.0 -
The S&W model 31 is an "I" frame not a"J" frame. The "I" frame is a little shorter. Mine is a 31 with the "I" frame. 0 -
She should have No trouble with .38 special J frame. Just match the grips to HER hand. Then it is comfortable to shoot. You can shoot target loads for fun and some GO loads for "work." I have yet to find a gal who cant handle a standard J frame 3 special. one thing would help is a 3 inch bbl vs a 2 inch. Less blast and felt recoil. 0 -
There is a lot about Smith and Wesson I dont know, I have never seen an I frame. 62win. Could you give some other examples I would like to add 1 or 2 to my collection. And please tell when they were made. Thanks in advance.
You'v gota kill it to grill it0 -
win62.. The model 31 was made on the "I" frame from 1957 to 61, only 4 yrs. In 1961 with the 31-1 it was changed to the "J" frame at ser #712954.
It continued in the "J" frame configuration until the model was dropped in 1991. Yours is an "I" frame, but many more were made on the "J" frame.0 -
Have your wife shoot a box of .32 H&R magnum before you have the cylinder rebored if you can find some one who has a.32mag. There is a significant difference in recoil. The .32S&W long is a very pleasant round as far as recoil is concerned and a very accurate one. It is still popular in Europe for target shooting. You may find that she is much less accurate with the 32mag. Accuracy rules.................Hondo 0
