rust.........yecccchhhhh!!!!

What is the best way to get rid of light surface rust, and do you take blueing off when you do this? What motion to remove the rust, circular, or linear? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have some 0000 steel wool that I used to take some very, very, light rust off of the exposed part of the bolt on my .270. No blueing there so wasn't worried.

  The best way I have found is with 0000 steel wool and a thin oil or kerosene. I usually scrub in a back and forth motion, but doubt if it matters. You won't remove surrounding bluing, but where the rust was will be shiny. Sometimes, on slightly heavier rust, and ink eraser works well; but it will take off bluing as well.

  BLUE&RUST REMOVER,NAVAL JELLY,STEEL WOOL,SANDPAPER, IVE USED THEM ALL WITH SOME SUCCESS!BUT THEY DO REMOVE BLUING ALSO. IF ITS A SMALL AREA,YOU CAN USE AN INSTANT BLUE FOR TOUCH-UP.

  BLUE WONDER!!!!!!! It's made by Novum
  will not remove gun blue. I'd use it on my most expensive gun.
  use it with 0000 steel wool which won't harm your blue unless you get carried away. visit their website at www.novumsolutions.com
  Also, W/D 40 which is a light abrasive along with 0000 steel will work also.

  Yeah, that Blue Wonder gun cleaner is about the best stuff I've ever seen to take off rust WITHOUT hurting the bluing. Not as cheap as kerosene, but no bad fumes and I can heat the metal up without all that smoke and flame!

  Another vote for blue wonder. It's a little expensive, but worth saving any gun of value. Use gloves. Otherwise, 0000 steel wool and oil with light pressure.

  I use a magnesium pad and Break free. It looks like a Brillo pad, but is made of magnesium. I found them at a gunshow a couple of years ago. It is softer than steel and will remove rust without taking off the bluing.

  oh yea, forgot to mention to try Brass woll if you can find it. The brass fibers don't rust like steel wool fibers do if you leave them in the nooks & crannies of your gun....

  Breakfree is a product that comes in a black bottle or can with yellow lettering. It is sold as a lubricant or protectant; you can find it at most places that carry gun cleaning supplies.
