poly-tech m14s ???
I'm looking for any imformation on a m14S polytech I recently acquired. I heard it's a poor mans M1. It appears to be in good working order and I only gave $200.00 for it.
Any opinions???

It would be more accurate to call it a poor man's M1A (which is made by Springfield, Inc). All of these are collectively called "M14 clones".
The Polytech was imported about 20 years ago from China. Their quality varies; some users are quite satisfied with them, others have found that they quickly develop excess headspace to the point that they become a danger to the shooter. The receivers are well made, but many other parts are soft; replacement by an armorer can be done, but it can run into a lot of money. They were imported by a company that obfuscated its identity, & were sold "as is, where is"; no warranty, no service, no parts. They cost in the $500-600 range. You can read a tech report by Fulton Armory on their website; they were brutal in their analysis.
You should have it checked out by a gunsmith before firing.
As far as price, you should get a mask: you stole it. Today they sell in the $500-600 range (although I never would pay that much for one). Even if you have problems with it, the price was low enough that you can afford to have it fixed and still be ahead.

With all due respect to those of differing opinions, let me say this. Those people who have one are usually quite delighted with them (including me). On the other hand most all of the negative commnents are from those who have no real personal experience with them. It is always in terms of "I heard that...."
As regards Fulton Armory, remember they are in the business of
(re)building M1a's, and I would take their criticism accordingly.
Take your rifle out and shoot it! Ammo is cheap and available.

Import of the Polytech was not 20 years ago. It had limited importation 1988-1989 (14-15 years ago). They were commonly found available from the distributors up through the Mid-1990's. They have gotten some bad press, but many who slam them have never owned one. Some of the original reports (bad press) came out of an "Independent Study/Survey" based out of Geneseo, Illinois. Funny that just so happens is where Springfield Armory is...???
Fulton has worked on some, but they also have worked on some. In other words, if they weren't willing to touch them, that would indicate they were crap. But if they are willing to work on them, they can't be all bad. Additionally they will be happy to take your money to fix a problem that may or may not exist on your gun. (I'm not calling them any names, they do exceptional work.) Yes my gunsmith did some tests himself on his Polytech vs. his Springfield. He did find the bolts to be softer on the Poly, but found the Poly receiver to actually be harder than the Springfield. So that begs the question, "Replace a $40 dollar bolt (if needed) or a $400 receiver (if needed)?" Until you shoot it a lot, most likely neither will ever be needed.
Anyway, I know many who have owned them and enjoyed them for years. At $200 I would be wondering whether it was stolen. If not by the person you got it from, definitely by you. No offense meant, that is just a really low price for one of those. Use it and enjoy.0 -
