NYS pistol permit

Need some info please, I have a NYS pistol permit that is limited to hunting and target use, What do I have to do to have it changed from this, to carry??? Are there any advantages to getting this changed?? Thanks for any help and suggestions.

  I'll assume you are upstate and not in the NYC area. I don't live in a county that restricts reason for carry. I know some counties do. My understanding is it's the judge that approves your permit that places the resriction. From talking to permit holders from other counties, I understand that it's nearly impossible to get it changed. It's being done mostly by anti gun judges. My understanding is that they can't deny you a permit if you can get through the criminal and mental backround checks, so they limit your ability to carry. I'm sure if you joined the local police force or became a security guard you would have no problem getting it changed. Someone told me about 15 years ago that the gun owners of Onadoga county were fighting to get rid of thier restriced permits, you may wan't to find someone from there to find out if they were successful or not. Or you can move here to Monroe county were you can even put down self defense on your application and get approved.
  
  If I were you, I'd start by calling my county clerk offices pistol permit person, then the judge that signed off your permit.

  Im in Delaware county and there are no restrictions here. What county are you in villamaster ?

  Thanks for the info, I am in Montgomery county, I have had it since 1975, probably the judge that sighned it is long gone, I need to get a duplicate because of wear and tear, just thought while I'am doing that maybe I can update it a little?? I will probably end up asking the judge. Thanks everyone.

  well, here we go again....i live in orleans county and i thought that that was unlawfull for them to issue a permit for that reason only..they use to do that in our county but i think the org. scope got involved and now a carry permit is a carry permit..like you said if there is a different judge there now, things may be different..talk to your pistol clerk first and see what they have to say...take care tom

  toolman, we are neighbors. I live right near the county line. I really think each locality is going to have to fight this one for themselves. I know there are county judges writing thier own rules. The real problem is the fact that there are so many laws nobody can keep track of them in this state. If nobody makes a stink the laws aren't going to be changed. Personally I wouldn't want to risk getting stopped by a anti gun Leo and going before a anti gun judge. I couldn't afford the legal expenses. There is a good chance the local system has changed since the issue of the permit in question. It's best handled with a call to the county clerk.
