Frontstrap checkering of a 1911 pistol

Can anyone recommend a gunsmith who does front strap checkering on 1911 Pistols. I am in Wyoming and no one around here does it. I called Kimber and they want $150 plus $30 shipping to to it. Is that high? Are there places that are a little more affordable? Please e-mail me at Nearearthorbit58@aol.com with any info. Thanks!

  I sawthat you didn't get an answer to this question. I don't live in your area and have no recommendations for a gunsmith near you, but do you have any interest in attempting the job yourself? There's a good article in the Feb., 2003 issue of Shooting Times magazine by Reid Coffield which explains the basics and discusses some tools. It really isn't that difficult if you first do a couple of practice jobs on a cold rolled steel bar to get the hang of it before trying it for real.

  Wilson Combat offers a neat little checkered frontstrap wraparound that will attach to the grip screws (bushings?) of your 1911 underneath the grip panels. Real inexpensive. If this is strictly for utility, you might want to try that. I like checkering, but my 1911 has Hogue finger groove grips which I think works about as well.
  
  Some gunsmiths do stippling which is less expensive. Done right, it's very effective and cool looking. But if you really want checkering go for it.

  Even simpler method is to take off the grips & put a piece of sandpaper around the front side & then secure it with the grip panels.
