What was the kind of gun in WWI / II that ...

looked like a large can or something with a very tiny barrell on the bottom of it? It was a stationary machine gun where the trigger was just some button you'd push in.. I was thinking of a maxim but I was looking around and the barrell looked very different..but i could be wrong

  I don't believe the maxim had a button for a trigger, I believe the MG you are thinking about was a .303 Vickers Mk I

  Sounds to me like a Schwarzlose Maschinegewehr Modell 05....it had a "T" handle and you pushed a button with your thumb.
