HK USP Tactical .45 with suppressor

Unfortunately I'm moving from FL to CA. I'm getting rid of all my NFA weapons (thanks to Senator Feinstein)

I have an HK USP .45 Tactical with a Gemtech SOS .45 suppressor. What is a fair price or trade value from a Class III dealer or private sale through the want ads with a transfer through a Class III dealer. I bought the gun/suppressor new in 1998. Perfect condition other than normal use wear from the slide on the breach and barrel. Less than 500 rounds of factory 230 gr. FMJ.

Please advise.

    Now that is a problem.. going to a state that does not honor your Class 3. Been there and done that. You can leave your weapon in Florida as long as it is locked up.(in a secure case such as a fire resistant lock box) Until you can sell it or decide to move to another state that will honor it. You probably will take a bath to a dealer if you sell in a hurry. If you have a trusted friend in Florida, that will not have the keys or access to the gun leave it there till you decide.

    Very good advice from select-fire. Just get a safe deposit box at a bank and put the suppressor inside the box, lock it up and take your key with you to California. Banks have no problem as long as the "can" is legal and registered- you could put a machinegun receiver in a safe deposit box (I know). Notify the BATF as to the new location of your suppressor at the bank, this is done quite often and it will not be an issue. I've got toys locked up in Utah where my other home is because I can never bring them into California. As much as I dislike Senator Diane Fienstien, the ban on silencers here in California pre dates her- I belive it goes back to 1923! I don't see any reason to sell your suppressor unless you really need the money.

    Thanks for all the advice. My old Class III dealer is not in business. How do I notify the BATF of a change of location of a registered item? Is the HK USP tactical with a threaded barrel accepted in CA or do I have to get a non threaded one and leave the barrel with the can in FL?

    glockmatt, you can contact BATF thru the internet site or call your regional office. Tell them what you are doing and request the form to relocate within your state. Make a copy of it and return it to them. You stated get rid of your NFA weapon(S) (more than 1 ? ). You can leave these weapon(s) at a trusted friends house provided they do not have access to them. Check your state that you are going to for the exact laws on Class 3 stuff. I do not know Kalifornia's laws on threaded barrels. Safe bet would be to leave the threaded one with the silencer and replace it with another. My Class 3 weapons were in another state for 11 years. Go figure, now my state allows them. Also if you transport or move to another state and take your Class 3 stuff you need permission from BATF to move interstate. Good luck, I know you will miss your toys, I did.

    Matt, sorry that I did not follow up on your post. Select-fire gave you the low down on the BATF requirements for storage. You will have to leave the threaded barrel for your HK with the suppressor. You can only have a threaded barrel on a pistol here in California if it is for a compensator- use on a silencer or flash hidder is specifically prohibited. In fact you may just choose to leave the pistol behind as well. Legally you'll have to register all of your handguns when you arrive in California. Forms to do this are available at any police station or sheriff's office. It is a time consumming and expensive- $20 per handgun- procedure and you may not want jump through the hoops.     I don't know all of the legalities of this issue, but if you are allowed to keep your suppressed HK in a safety deposit box in Florida, would it be possible to keep the same supprressed firearm in a safety deposit box in a neighboring state such as Oregon, Nevada or Arizona? I'm just thinking in terms of proximity.

    One more very important point I need to make......I have an extreme dislike for Diane Fienstien and I support the secession of Northern California! [}:)]

    Scoots, yes you can do this. It requires the filing of ATF Form 5320.20 and approval by the BATF before you can transport the NFA Weapon across state lines and into its new home. You have to state on the form if the firearm is to be in the new location on a temporary basis or if it is a permanent move. When and if the "can" ever goes back to Florida a new 5320.20 needs to be filed.

    Call me paranoid but I would lock the suppressor up in the safety deposit box and would leave the gun with a trusted friend in Florida. The state of New York has a de-facto registration system in place as well. All handguns are listed on your permit by make/model/caliber/Serial# and a copy is maintained at the County Sheriff's Office. I know that your Class III goodies are already registered with the Federal Government but the state of California seems to be a little bit more aggressive and you could see this gun confiscated after somebody passes a law banning it before the Federal Government passes a confiscation law and that dark day comes. I moved from NY in 2001 and all handguns that I once owned (and registered in NY) are now sold/traded/replaced. If I was in your position I'd leave all guns that I planned on keeping forever due to sentimental value and then start buying more upon arrival to California. Do you plan on living in California for an extended period of time or is this a temporary living location?

    For everyone's information I searched the BATF website, particularly the NFA section. Interstate transfer of a suppressor "does not" require prior BATF approval. You just need to submit in writing to the BATF of the new location to be updated in their Gestapo databank. Transfer of machineguns do require prior approval. This is all provided that the State will honor the Form 4. CA does not. Safety deposit boxes are allowed for storage in the Free States.
