need help from you shotgun experts
on average, how many inches of barrel does it take to go from open cylinder to approximately improved cylinder?...from open cylinder to full choke? your best guesstimates are really appreciated, not looking for, nor do i need precision. thanks for your help.

All of the constriction is in the last few inches of bbl, and can be changed by a smith (opened up) with a cylinder hone made for this purpose. You can not go from open cyl. to anything. That would require puting constriction in the bbl. You have to get another bbl. or install after market choke tubes or a devise that adds constriction such as a poly-choke. So to answer your question aprx 2 or 3 inches.

It would help, nebrguy, if we knew what you were trying to accomplish here. You can't go from c. to i.c. or c. to f.c. under most normal circumstances BECAUSE: most choked barrels are choked internally by a restricted bore diameter, and are made that way by removing less metal in the area of the choke when the barrel is bored. That is why so many (over the years) external choking devices like the Poly-Choke were developed, to choke the shot pattern just after it leaves the bore, and why screw-in choke tubes were developed to permit the internal changing of choke sizes. It is quite common to, for example, cut back a full choke barrel to a lesser amount of restriction such as modified by removing a couple of inches from the end of the barrel, thus removing some of the internal choke and moving the muzzle back to where the bore is less restricted. One can also open a tight choke by reaming it out with a reamer of the desired diameter from the muzzle end. But unless you have access to a steel rolling mill where you could reduce the diameter of the last few inches of your tube by rolling under great pressure it is unlikely you can create a more restriced choke from a more open choke. If you are thinking about cutting your barrel back to obtain a cylinder bore you'll probably have to cut off about 4 1/2 inches. Be sure you're going to have a minimum of 18 inches left, which is the required legal minimum shotgun barrel--18 1/2 inches is better--with an overall gun length of 26 inches. 0 -
It is very easy to go from Cylinder ir I/C to Full. Simply screw it out and screw in another.
If it is a gun with fixed choke like yours (I assume) you can take it to a gunsmith and have screw in chokes installed.
barrel length does not matter. You can have a 20 inch barrel with a full choke or cylinder choke. Choke is simply the amount of constriction. Full choke will have more constriction that cylinder choke.

fellows, i appreciate the feedback. you all gave me info on things i'm aware of. i'll take the blame for wording my question poorly, fair enough? all i wanted was approx. how many inches of taper is there from the muzzle end of a full choked 870 bbl. back until you would be at about improved cylinder, and then back to open cylinder. der pretty much answered this as 4 1\2 inches to open. about 3 inches from the muzzle to imp. cyl. sound about right then? thanks 0 -
Have a gun smith mike it. Then you know where the choke starts. Different manufactures use different tapers to create constriction.
