MI Carbine HELP

Hello Dragon, as I have said before on GB I do not do private e-mails because all that will happen if I answer you in private is I'll get another 10 e-mails from guys wanting to know the answer I gave to you!
Everything I have to say on GB is for all eyes and if you want a private answer about something you can e-mail ME.
Here is the answer to your question: The Carbine was built by a consortium of private firms and the War Department simply ordered them to use a standard of steel known as Springfield Armory Grade, gun quality. They were free to out source this steel from any firm at any price as long as it met these government specs: War Department 4140 Special- fine grain, gun quality billet. INSPECTION REQUIRED. Here are those specs:
CARBON- .35% to .45%
MANGANESE- .70% to 1.00%
PHOSPHORUS- not over .04%
SULPHER- .04% TO .09%
CHROMIUM- .80% to 1.10%
MOLYBDENUM- .15% to .25%
Both the receiver and bolt were required to met 4140 specs while the barrels meet WD 1350 specs which were different.
The receiver steel was purchased as bar stock, annealed, pickled, and cut to length. The weight of the blank was about 4 lbs but 85% of that weight was removed during the machining process leaving a 10 ounce receiver. After machining and before final inspection the receiver was heated and tempered to these specs: PREHEAT to 700 degrees, heat to temperature of 1550 degrees and quench in oil. Temper for 1 hour at not less than 375 nor more than 450 degrees. The specified Rockwell hardness was expected to be 38-45 on the C scale. As long as the receivers met these specs the War Department was satisfied no matter which firm made the carbine.
There is of course much more to the manufacturing process of the receivers but I am not an M1 Carbine expert...ask me how an M1 Garand is put together and I can get into some REAL specifics!
