Info on unusual Rubber Coated Barrel? Tactical?
Thanks in advance for any info you guys might have.
Recently, acquired a very unusual rifle barrel. I think it was made for a Police or Military Tactical gun, but I figured this would be the place to ask.
The barrel is about 22 inches long and the bore is about .250, maybe a little more or less (without slugging it and casting the chamber, I am not sure what it shoots). The very odd thing is that the barrel, from the crown to where the threads start on the breach end is covered with about 1/32 to 1/16 of black rubber. This is not a "do it yerself" rubber coating. It is bonded to the metal and has a matt black finish. Rifling is strong and clean and it fires some type of necked cartridge, will get a cast of the chamber later. Looks like the threads might fit a Rem 700 or something similar, I guess I'll have to get the calipers on those too. Am guessing it is a .270, 25-06, or something in the .25 to .27 range. I have been around military weapons and shooting most of my life, but have never come across a barrel with this type of coating.
If anyone has any info on rubber coated barrels or knows who and where they may have been used, I would appreciate your sharing your knowledge
