Home Defence & Range: Auto VS Revolver
Hello friends,
I just posted a question yesterday, and got great comments and advice from many of you. Thanks for all your time, and comments. I guess, I should be a little more precise in my question.
Though, most people would suggest a revolver for home defense, my purpose is to have fun with it too, at the range etc. Somehow I feel like I have more fun shooting a semi-auto. If reliability is the main
factor, then how unreliable are the semi auto. I do have experience with rented autos that they jam once in a while during shooting. Would this happen frequently if I buy a new gun like a Beretta, or a Sig???? I'm only considering these two brands due to how the look, feel, and fire. I know this will sound very silly to most of you, but having a good looking gun is also in my equation, as I would like to proudly show it off among my friends also, who are into guns. But still don't want to sacrifice any of the important issues too.
As for a revolver, I don't seem to get myself to shoot them often, though I know they are reliable. Also a fact of having a couple of mags loaded gives security of enough ammo. So please advice me, how wrong would I be doing, if I choose a semi auto over a revolver???? Or should I just stick with .38/.357Mag revolver?? (I can only afford one handgun right now, someday I will have both)
As for a shotgun, I am considering a Remington 870 Super Mag, in case I use it for turkey too. Though it would make any intruder's worse nightmare, I find hard having one under my pillow, or maneuvering one around the house, specially around stairs and door ways. In a semi auto, I'm considering the .40 cal in Beretta 96F, still having good velocity, and punching better ballistics than 9MM. And if I get the Sig, I might get the .357Sig barrel too, for its velocity, and punching power (just to have). (Too bad Beretta has not come out with .40/.357Sig combo, like the Sig). I do intend to visit the shooting range at least once a month on regular basis, if not more. I'm not married yet, no kids, so safety is no problem.
Given that I'm asking lot of questions, I sincerely will appreciate any replies that you experts will give. Moreover, it will help many others too. Thanks in advance! Rog. Let's keep our guns and keep country safe from lunatics, domestic or foreign!!!!!

Did you read my reply in your other string? The 357 Sig has the same penetrating power as a 357 Mag. My own shotgun of choice is a Mossberg with 10" barrel (a Class III gun) but I don't know how much a shotgun is buying you. For sure, in skilled hands the shotgun is an awesome deterrent but takeawys are much easier with a longer barrel gun in close quarters and in the majority of cases, your intruder will be armed with a screwdriver, knife or club more frequently than a gun. If you give up the gun to him he could possibly kill you with your own weapon. The much heralded sound of racking a slide action shotgun gives up your location and what about the infrequent round that Murphy decided to not chamber while you're racking? The Sig will have a round chambered and ready to go (in safe, double action)and in many cases one round will do the trick of stopping a dirtbag. More food for your thoughts, Ed 0 -
Sig and Beretta have good reputations.Most modern autos are very reliable.Are jams a problam?Keep your guns mantained and lubed and you should be fine.There are lemons out there but I believe that is more the exception than the rule.Of all the autos I have the only ones that ever had jams were pre 1980s guns,usually shooting hollow points or reloads.None of my modern pistols,Glocks,Ruger,1911s ect..have given me any trouble.I may be just lucky or it can be I keep them clean and lubed.CW

Hi, you state haveing clips for more fire power you might consider that you can load a 6 gun quickly with speed loaders and practice also there is one part to a 6 gun and not 2 (ie pistol and magazine) if you did have to reload in the darkness and accidently droped your magazine well now you might as well have rocks you can flip the cylinder open on a 6 gun and poke in a couple rounds ever so quietly and also you dont have to chase your brass target shooting if you plan on reloading, brass gets hard to chase when you target practice on a 20 degree afternoon
this is just my opinion and am no expert by no means all guns are great some just suit some better than others

You are probably not going to need extra magazines in a home defense situation. The bad guy is not coming in to your house to get in a firefight, if he even knew you had a 2 shot derringer loaded and ready to shoot he would go to another house. Once you fire the first shot he is going to start thinking of how he can get out of your house. I am in favor of the wheel gun, but you like the semi auto and they are great guns, it is unlikely that either of those quality guns is going to jam. 0 -
Some of the new revolvers have 8 rounds, not far from the 10 rounds most semiautos come with now. Whether a semiauto is reliable or not is just not a matter of how well you maintain it, it is the possiblility of a greater number of variables causing a failure in a semiauto and the resulting action required to clear it. The second part is up to you and how much time you practice in clearing jams, cycling to clear rounds that do not fire, etc. In the dark, if you get a stovepipe, what do you do while carrying a flashlight?
Who says you need only one gun?. Get one for self defense and one for fun shooting, such as a Ruger or Browning 22 semiauto. These are reliable, accurate, and fairly inexpensive guns that are fun to shoot. Plus the ammunition for these is real inexpensive.0 -
I think you will do far better with a revolver for target shooting as you will learn to master double action trigger control--something that many DA/SA guns like the Beretta and SIG use for that first shot. I've gotten to be a far better shot doing revolver target shooting than I did from months of semi-auto work.

I personally shoot a semi-auto better than a revolver. I have had many of each. Also, if properly maintained, the semi-auto should give years of use. One factor for semi-autos is that if you leave mags loaded full all the time the magazine follower will eventually lose some of its tension sometimes causing jams. I just rotate my mags occasionally and change springs when needed.
That said, I also agree that most people aren't there for a fire-fight. There might be exceptions to that however, and those are the ones you should prepare for. I use a (some consider ugly) Glock model 20 in 10mm with night sights, internal laser, and tac-light. I have a total of 3 15 round clips loaded at all times.
As far as wheelguns, like someone mentioned, there are some with more than 5 or 6 rounds. S & W makes a nice DA 686+ that holds 7. IMHO, being comfortable and confident with what you shoot is far more important than whether you choose wheel or semi-auto.
It doesn't matter what you shoot, just shoot it well...0
