US military hammer forged barrel??
Ive come across an old mauser with a US ord marked hammer forged barrel. Its stamped with the following: flaming bomb, S with a circle around it, 1 45, 30.06 cal. Its on a Waffenfabrik mauser a-g, oberndorf a/n 1917 GEW98. The barrel has the spiral forge marks, and im wondering whats its off of. Any Ideas?

I wonder if it's a Springfield barrel re-threaded for the Mauser action. Somebody really needs to come up with a way for these inanimate objects to talk. 0 -
I'm inclined to agree with Sunray. I have seen that flaming ball before, but never on a mauser.

That S in a circle is a Sedgley mark. Sedgley made barrels for use as replacments. Apparently many of the Sedgley barrels were never used and were sold as surplus. The spiral forge marks must have been added for decoration. The Sedgley barrel I have and others I have seen did not have them. 0 -
Im guessing its off a 1903, but I wasnt aware they were spiral hammer forged. The barrel is blued, and the spiral is very noticable in the light. Its stumped a few guys that have looked at it. The blueing is really deep and rich, but the stamps show no sign of reblueing. The stock is european style, and the fit is excellent. I DO wish some of these old rifles could talk!!!

Hammer forging is a lot more recent than 1/45. The wavy finish you are seeing is probably chatter marks from lathe turning.
My guess is that it's either a Springfield or Enfield. The rifling style could probably determine which it is.0
