Test Pattern-12ga NFA/AOW info
IMACLONE 2- Your topic drifted to a legality discussion and hit the 10 response limit before I could post about your barrel length/pattern size question.
Several years ago I conducted a series of pattern tests using 18in. and 12in. barreled 12 Ga. shotguns and the results were an eye opener. I found that the image of short barreled shotguns throwing barn door sized patterns at close range is a myth.
A 12in. barrel patterns basically the same, about 12-15 inches, as an 18in. barrel out to roughly 30 feet. Beyond this range the short barrel's pattern begins to open rapidly, with the lighter shot sizes opening faster. I found that past 10 yds. the short barrel's pattern opens in sort of a bell curve rather than a proportional increase. In other words a 15in. pattern at 10 yds. doesn't equate to 30in. at 20 yds. As I recall it was more like 3-4 times the size. (Sorry, I don't have my data with me or I could quote you the specific numbers on this.)
It seems to me you'd need a barrel not much longer than your shells to achieve what you're looking for. Try a Claymore instead.
BTW, firing both barrels makes no difference in the pattern size. It will only increase the shot density.

You have the info that I was looking for.
I have come to the conclusion that Iam better off to buy a AOW or SBS from my local 02/SOT.
The NFA rules are trickey, that is one reason I posted, that way I kind of know what I can do & cant do.
One thing for sure is that you do not want to get sideways with the ATF boys.
What I have found out is that getting a double barrel AOW would be a expensive adventure. Due to the limited avilabilty of the same.
But, a 'SBS' short barreled shot gun can be had for a more resonable amount. Although it will cost $200 for the NFA tax.
Have an appointment today to look at a 10" & 14" mossberg cruiser.
