mauser bolt question
Never mind why I need it off....
How on earth do you get the extractor collar off a Mauser bolt? 98 that is.

If I want to change from straight to bent, bolt body. what are the pro's and cons of some of my choices. i.e. buy one on the auction described as "forged 98 bolt" appears new with turned down handle.
Or, take my bolt somewhere and have it turned down.
And if I buy one does it have to be fitted by a gunsmith to function correctly?0 -
I don't know about forged VS bent but suspect that one is cut off and a new piece welded on whereas the other is just heated and bent; it is a stylistic choice. If you buy a new bolt you don't need a smith if you have headspace gauges. They run about $20-$30 each and you need a go and no go gauge. Just insert them in the chamber; the bolt should close on the go but shouldn't close on the no go or you shouldn't be able to close it easily and don't force it. However ifyou are only concerned with one gun I would not bother to buy them; just take it to a smith. He can check it and probably wont' charge much if anything to check. Correcting headspace is another matter; if you reload you can get around it with a rimless cartridge if you necksize only but if you want to use commercial ammo you would need to have the chamber reamed or have the barrel set back, depending on ifyou had too little or too much headspace.
I would get another bolt if the gun is all matching and safe your current one. Also if you are going to alter the stock get a new sporter stock or another military one to cut down and save your original for future times.

Too have a quality bolt done it's best to have a bolt handle welded on the bolt. A lot of different styles available from Brownells. Next best choice is to have yours forged. A new bolt for a Mauser means you have to have the gun headspaced. New bolt "MUST" be headspaced to make sure it's safe. About a 50/50 chance a new bolt will headspace correctly without further work......... 0 -

Thanx for the info, guys, Im planning on buying a new barrel anyways, si it'll need headspaced. I think I'm gonna go with the new bolt body instead of messing with the original.
