8MM Mauser Identification

I have a 8 mm Mauser. It has a straight handle on the bolt,and therefore does not have the notch cut into the stock, it has the following markings, on the receiver "dou", below that "42", on the left side of the receiver "G.24 (t)" and forward of that "4876", the same "4876" is also stamped on the bolt handle,on the right side of the receiver there is a small marking that I can't tell what it is. I hope this will help. This rifle was recently given to me by my father, who brought it home from Germany in about 1945.

  Where can I define the markings on a German Mauser. I notice a lot say mod 98, mine does not, the bolt on mine also comes straight out, not curved down towards the stock, hence no notch in the original stock. Is there a book where you can look up the different markings?

  Yes, there are books but they are expensive. Try Military Mausers of the World or Mauser Bolt Rifles by Ludwig Olsen.

  Give us a good description of any and all markings on the barrel and receiver and I bet we can nail it. May be, you don't have a 98, a lot of the straight bolts are Model 96 or 93 or 95.
