Test Pattern-12ga NFA/AOW

I want to build a NFA/AOW 12ga double barrel shot gun.

Need any info on shot patterns vs barrel lengths

Will be using 3" bb shot shells. Want to cover a 15 ft. dia circle when fired at 30ft, using both barrels.

The donor shotgun will be a Norinco 99 double 12ga.

I figure the barrel length will need to be about 8-10 inches, but without data its a wild guess.

Dont wont to fill out Form1 barrel length, until I get some data.

Any help welcome.

  Barrel length, is not as important, as the choke you will have , when you are finished. Are your barrels choked now? If you are shooting BB size shot, you don't need any choke, or not much. If I were you, I'd steal a old bed sheet, and try what you have now at that distance. Shot guns are like people. Each one has it's personally. Some will shot large shot good, and others throw it in clumps.Just remember, the bigger the shoot, the less barrel, and, or choke you need. The forcing cone, will determine, your pattern as well.   I think you better measure again 8"-10" ? Won't you be in the forearm area? Most AOW shotguns do fine in the 14" version. And why a double barrel? A good fuctional pump would be excellent. Just my 3 Cents worth (inflation)

  Double the fun letting both got at the same time.
  Not worried about the forearm.
  This is to be the "Door Knocker", for home/shop security, no need to aim, thats why I want to cover a 15ft dia @ 30 ft.

  15 ft spread at 30 ft? Do the math, that's high expectations. That would be a 28 degree coverage area. Probably need a really short barrel to get that.[:D]

  I would get the sheet and try a .44 mag with a 6" barrel and a shotshell#9's . Gonna be about the same results. However I don't think the coverage is gonna be 15'.

  IAMACLONE, that NFA Weapon will be a short barreled shotgun and NOT an Any Other Weapon because you are using an existing shotgun- the Norinco 99. To build an AOW you need to start with a smooth bore firearm which NEVER had a butt stock on it. This is why most AOW are built on pump action receivers, something like the Mossberg Cruiser- it was OEM with only a pistol grip- so it is a good base to build on. You'll need to find a double barrel receiver that NEVER had a stock fitted to it...and be able to prove this fact. The NFA making tax will still be $200 on the Form 1 but the later transfer tax would be only $5 on an AOW. The BATF won't accept your Form 1 for AOW unless you can show that the donor smooth bore started its life out as something other a shotgun with a buttstock. I'd try a barrel length of 12" as this always seems to pattern about right.

  I believe you should listen to some advice here and go purchase a short barrel shotgun through a Class 3 dealer. Just 5 bucks to do the permit thru Uncle Sam.

  I thought that the making of a AOW shotgun would be like that of a AOW Krink,meaning that you cut the stock off so that it cant be fired from the shoulder.
  Just great!, that blows my ideal for a double, hum, back to the drawing board. Or cough up $200 vs the $5.
  At least I have not purchased the Norinco.

  Its better to be sure & safe with the NFA goodies, otherwise you offend the NFA Gods, dont want to do that, by any means.

  IMACLONE, those Krinkov's that you see were not made from existing AK type rifles- you cannot turn a rifle into a pistol or and AOW. What these manufacturers are using are new receivers that have never been assembled into rifles. They simply take the bare receiver and then assemble it into an AOW. Once a firearm has been manufactured as a rifle it stays a rifle and no amount of modification will change that status. We had another post a few days ago about making a pistol from a rifle- PROHIBITED- check the archives for it.
  
  I think you misunderstand the NFA Tax rates. It will cost you $200 to manufacture or register ANY NFA Weapon- Short barrel shotguns and rifles, Silencers, AOW, Destructive Devices- all of them cost $200 on a Form 1. The $5 AOW tax is the TRANSFER tax paid on an existing registred AOW when it is transfered to an new owner on a Form 4. If you locate an AOW for sale and want to purchase it the weapon will cost you only a $5 tax. If you want to make your own AOW it will still cost $200. The difference in tax rates is for transfers ONLY.
