Wolf .223
I would like some feed back on Wolf brand .223 Ammo. I will be shooting it in a Bushmaster Varminter. It will be used for plinking only.

Personally, I have used Wolf 62 gr .223 in a Mini 14. Less than 2 inch groups at 100 yards. That is not what is considered to be normal for the Mini 14......and I have been told for Wolf ammo. I believe the 62 grain was good in the 1 x 9 twist of the barrel, though. I have only shot a total of 450 rounds of it, but very consistent "feel" and total reliability this far. Rather "dirty" and leaves a lot of residue behind and very different smelling when fired. At 10 cents a round, it was very impressive! If I was paying more, I wouldn't use it because of the mess it makes......my opinion. I wouldn't make a real recommendation to anyone because of it being dirty, but if you don't mind the clean up.....your call!

I have a heavy barrel match colt 1-9 twist and it shoots tight groups in the 62 gr. I've shot quite a few rounds thru it and no misfires , hangfires ect. everything was fine. Cheap ammo for some pretty good results. It is a little dirty but I clean my gun after every time I play with it. 0 -
Just bought another 1000 rounds today, the 62 gr FMJ, and ive never had problem in either my mini-14 or my AR-15, and ive also found it accurate...BUT!!! be aware some manufacturers or Ar-15's advise against Wolf ammo becuase of the laquer coating used on it, saying that during rapid fire it can melt off from heat and cause malfunctions. Ive never had this happen and still shoot Wolf through my AR, i just make sure i clean it VERY well, becuase i have noticed excessive grime and build up from this ammo. As long as you clean it well, you should be fine and save alot of money over other brands. Good luck. 0 -
Why would you buy one of best rifles going and shoot that crud building laqueered metal case stuff in it. Doesn't seem very logical to me. I can see shooting the stuff for plinking in a cheap gun, but an accurate varmint rifle, I wouldn't think about it. If you want a plinking round buy some UMC. 0 -

For budget .223, I usually shoot S&B. Or I buy from one of the quality mass reloaders here in DFW.
The only Wolf ammo I shoot is 7.62x39 in my SKS's and AK's.0 -

UMC was also cautioned against, it causes malfunctions in some AR's. Im getting this directly from the Olympic Arms website. Besides, if hes planning on doing alot of practicing then he wants something inexpensive, and as long as he cleans his rifle well he'll be fine. FYI i shoot S&B also and its fine ammo to.0 -
As a couple others have said, for plinking with my AR, Mini, or 556, I use S&B. I do use the Wolf in the AK though.

I have a customer who has both a Bushmaster and a Ruger Mini 14 and he was told by both companies that they should NOT shoot any Wolf ammo in their makes. He said they had told him that the steel ammo is much more condusive to jamming and that the primers are much harder on the Wolf ammo that others and that the wear and tear on the firing pins after many rounds will cause them to break. Just a thought for ya from the companies that make these guns.. 0 -
Wolf ammo is probably why the firing pin on my buddies Mini-14 broke. However, I've shot quite a bit thru my Mini-14 with no problems. My buddies firing pin broke after about 5000 rounds of wolf. I've only got about 1500 rounds of wolf thru mine, should be good for another 3500 or so *winks* 0 -
I like wolf ammo but when things start getting hot the lacquer on the hulls will melt and make a mess,you will know by the smell.But its accurate and dependable.HTH
