I do not own one of these.....but my guess would be that the plug is still in. I don't know how to do it on a benelli, but on my mossberg I had to take the mag tube off, remove the dowl/plug, and screw the mag tube back on. Keep in mine that you must have the dowl in when you go hunting or shooting at the range (thats the way it is in Maryland and Virginia at least)

Hmmm, in that configuration it only holds 3 rounds max. I guess I ll just take the rod out and put the spring back in. It is wierd, the instruction manual shows the takedown with the rod and stuff. I dont know...

The 7 shot mag extention will be nearly barrel length (which HAS to be pre-ban if you have pistol grip), the 5 shot should be a magazine extention of maybe 4" long or so (you can see a picture of the extentions here: http://benelliusa.com/parts/)... The stock configuration holds only 3 or 4. I don't remember. I got rid of my M3 (sadly) 3 or 4 years ago. Hope this clears the water.
They are neat guns, and I can't say enough about Benelli in general.

It doesn't matter what you shoot, just shoot it well...

Well, according to their website, the new M3's are in a 5 +1 configuration. I don't think mine was. If that is true, then unscrew the forearm cap and take out the metal capacity limiting rod, and you should get your extra 2 shots back.
