Shoulder Footpounds Felt ?
Does anybody know a source for finding out what the shoulder footpound felt recoil is like for the various caliber guns. I know they vary depending on the gun but I'm looking for general info here.

I guess to answer you in the most general of terms, I would say the smallest cartrige and the heaviest weapon. This is a much more complicated question that you think. First, the recoil directly to your shoulder is pounds force not ft lbs. That force is dependant on the charge, bullet mass, mass of the weapon, and the type of action. Better to get owners opinion on their rifle than try to work with the numbers. You do get into a ft lb thing when you talk about muzzle rise. As I said, talk to owners or better still try a few of your buds rifles.

I hope this is what you were looking for. Remember that guns with proper muzzlebrakes will greatly reduce the felt recoil as will a heavier (than listed) gun.

Many years ago I dated a women who was an engineer and her belief was that ANY problem known to man (or woman) could be solved mathmatically- if you only knew the correct formula any of the worlds problems could either be explained or eliminated. Here is the formula to solve your problem about how much recoil is generated by various calibers and loads when fired from firearms of differing weights:
[V(Bw+1.75PW)]Squared and divided by 64.348 X Fw= free recoil energy
In this formula
V= Muzzel velocity in feet per second
Bw= bullet weight in pounds (7000 grains to a pound)
Pw= propellant weight in pounds (7000 grains to a pound)
Fw= firearm weight in pounds (includes scopes, slings, ammo)
The only variable to this formula is for muzzel velocites UNDER
2500fps the 1.75 constant is changed to 1.5 but other than that there is nothing to it! Of course many reloading books have tables which give examples of recoil for various loadings- but how much fun would that be compared to doing your own calculations? ENJOY!

cbxjeff, the type of action should have no effect on this particualar formula since it is based on muzzel velocity, powder charge, bullet weight, and the weight of the firearm. If a gas operated rifle of the same weight slowed the velocity of the bullet to any great degree due to bleeding off the propellant to operate the action, that would show up in the final calculation. If a 150gr .30 caliber bullet was fired from a bolt 9 pound action rifle at 2700fps and the identical bullet was fired from a 9 pound gas operated auto loader at 2650 fps the difference in free recoil would be clearly shown (probably not amounting to too much). Recoil operated auto loaders should have no change in velocity numbers.
Adding a muzzel brake would of course change the recoil charactoristcs of the firearm. The effect of muzzel devices, recoil pads, and other recoil reducing devices cannot be calculated with this formula since these devices vary in effectiveness and the formula operates at a specific constant while still allowing for a change in the weight of the firearm. Trust me, I did not develope this formula out myself! A ballistics engineer crunched these numbers-I just passed them along.

btw, a couple very easy and cheap recoil reducers for the range:
1. if you shoot off of a sandbag, use a sling and wrap the sling under the sandbag and pull tight before firing, this will cause the but of the gun to usually drop when fired, but won't come back as hard because it has to pull the weight of the sand with it (I use 60# bags that I buy at the hardware store for putting in my truck).
2. Use a bag of shotgun shot (smaller size works better - 8's or so) and put it between your shoulder and your gun, you have to re-adjust it every shot, but it helps tame even my .458 mag.
I never feel the recoil shooting at game, but I sure do at the range!
