SKS experts >?<

I am asking for my dad. he is loaning a relative some money and in return keeping a SKS. now my uncle says the sks is Russian made and better quality than the Chineese or Korian SKS's. he said he bought it for $350 at a gun show.

I told my dad that a buddy that I work with got an SKS a while back for $150. Not sure where it's made.

My dad wants to know wether a Russian SKS is really made that much better and if he over paid for the gun.

There are some markings on the gun as follows.

BP6124 on the trigger guard, magizine, bolt, back end of the reciever, left side of the reciever, and looks like it was engraved into the gas barrel.

on the lower barrel between the bayonnet and gas barrel looks like
"C.A.I. ST. ALB VI" these letters are only the bottom half is visable . I am guessing at some of them.

I am not expert about guns, so please don't judge, and I may have made a few typos.

The initials you gave indicate that it was imported by Century Arms International. The early import Russian rifles are worth considerably more than $150. $350 would be pretty high even with matching numbers unless it has some heirloom value to you.

Dan--I'll "Go with Mo" and agree that Russian-made SKS rifles in good shape are worth more than $150. But, after reading your post several times I can't answer if it's worth what your Dad loaned the relative, because you didn't tell us how much the loan was for. None of our business, really--but you get my point. Yes, they are just about the best ever made. The rest of the legend after C.A.I. is St. Albans, Vermont.

I believe the Russians have milled receivers as opposed to stamped ones on the Chinese. Last week at the gunshow the Russians were going for about $350(believe it or not) and there aren't near as many around as there used to be.

All SKS's have milled receivers first of all. As for the value, normally the Russian SKS's will run between $250-350, depending on condition. Depending on the loaned amount, you should be okay. It is definitely an import from the early to mid 1990's. There are $150 SKS's, but the Russian ones aren't that price anymore. They were in the $135 range years ago, but they haven't been that cheap in years. Back in 1996, the hardwood were $135 +/- and the laminated were $165 +/-. Of course in that time period the Chinese ones were $50-75 less than that. Since the supply of both the Russian and Chinese SKS's have all but dried up, the prices are noteably higher today.

I'll have to agree with Irarmsx. While it is on the high end you should be ok. I've still seen deals on the Russian SKS for around $250-275 w/ bayonnet, but few and far between.

lrarmsx- Just a note, Norinco did make a stamped receiver SKS. You can find them occasionally.

Russian SKS rifles usually command a bit of a premium over Chinese made rifles. 250-400 dollars is a common price depending on condition. And yes, the Russian SKS is built very well. Romanian SKS rifles tend to be well built too. Norincos are good but the tolerances are a bit wider.

Ney - some Norinco's were stamped but most are milled....

well not sure about stamped but do know there were forged and milled recievers...if anyone has a pic of a stamped one please post it....thanks tom
