Drilling and tapping for scope base--HELP!
Hey, gang---I'm back with another (hopefully non-stupid) question:
I'm preparing to scope my Yugo 48A Mauser. After consulting with my local dealer, I'm taking his advice and using a Leupold Mauser 95/98 "STD" one-piece mount. I have machinist buddies who can do the drilling and tapping of the three holes in the mount, but I have a concern: After placing the mount this way and that way on the receiver (or whatever you call the bit of the rifle that gets drilled for the scope-base,) I find that the farthest-forward front screw-hole on the mount is going to end up past the front end of the bolt when the bolt is fully closed. Is this okay? Or does the front-most screw-hole have to be behind the front end of the bolt? The reason I'm worried is that I don't know if one should be drilling a hole past the front-end of the bolt in the receiver; isn't that drilling a hole too close to the chamber where the bullet sits? Or is it a non-issue because of the depth of the holes to be drilled? Almost all scopes are mounted with the front hole in the location you have described. Ideally, the hole is a "blind hole" and is drilled only deep enough to engage 3 or 4 threads of the screw. Very often, however, the hole is drilled completely through the receiver, and the barrel threads are visible in the bottom of the hole. There is almost never any adverse effects as long and the barrel itself is not drilled. Any penetration of the barrel itself is asking for trouble. To reassure yourself, go down to Wal-Mart and look at some of their rifles that are drilled and tapped at the factory. You'll find the front holes in the forward part of the receiver ring. 0 -
HEY! Herr Mountain-Hunter! Good to see you again---metaphorically speaking, that is.
It never occurred to me to look at a factory-drilled rifle, but now that you mention it, you're right---that frontmost hole IS past the end of the bolt. Its good to know that if my buddies don't drill all the way through---which would be kinda silly, considering the threaded portion of those itty-bitty screws that came with the base measure only about .216" long---then everything should be okey-dokey.
