Foremost (Savage) model 6400

My son just purchased a nice little bolt action Foremost Model 6400 in 30-30 cal. I have since learned that this rifle was manufactured by Savage for J.C. Penney, and is in fact a Savage Model 340. Can anyone tell me the age and any history of this piece? It has serial number A452034, has a gold colored trigger, and was manufactured in Westfield, Mass. I thought Savage was mfg. in Chicopee Falls, Mass. What's the story here? Help!

    Bout the only thing I can help you with is the "Westfield Massachusetts" marking. Savage relocated there from Chicopee Falls Massachusetts in the late 1950's.
    All Model 340's till the end of production in the mid 80's have that address.
    Since it was sold by J.C. Penney under the "FOREMOST" name it's considered a "Store Brand" or "Hardware" piece and has little collectors value.

    You would have to contact Savage to possibly get some information on date of manufacture, or at least a time frame. As stated before store brands have no collector value, being sold only as shooters even though they may be fine, fine shooters.

    No, "Tall1", this was my first question. My second question was a request for a price lookup for the piece to determine it's approximate worth. Only one person, "outdoortexas", was kind enough to do so. You replied simply that as a "store brand" it had no value as a collectible, which I was already aware of. Thanks for your reply, though.

    Actually Pete, what Tall1 was trying to say was that your Formost brand rifle will not bring as much as the same rifle with the Savage name, though it is every bit as good a rifle. In most cases, the bigger the name, the better it retains value. The Savage 340 was manufactured between 1950 and 1985, but I have no serialization for that model.
