SKS.... bayonet ??????
If your SKS has a bayonet lug already installed can you legally install a bayonet? I was browsing through the latest Shotgun News and there was an article which stated you could not put a bayonet on an SKS if it didn't come with one. Whats the deal. Anybody have the lowdown on this? Also touch on the issue of the "naughty" items you can or can't have installed on your SKS, i.e. pistol grip, folding stock, bayonet, muzzle brake etc. Thanks for your help guys and gals.

If your SKS carbine still has the fixed 10 round magazine you are entitled to add two "deadly features" instead of the one allowed on a firearm like an AK. You could for instances add a pistol grip and a flash hidder. If you were to add a detachable magazine that counts as one feature and you'll be allowed only one other "nasty".
The bayonet on these SKS carbines is a complicated subject. Those carbines which are classified as Curio and Relics (Russian or Yugoslavian) are allowed to keep their blades. There was a cut off date of around 1991 (I'm not really sure- it was too long ago and not interesting enough for me to file it away) for bayonets on new production SKS. This was caused by a rider to some obscure piece of legislation which was passed by Congress that some how accounted for preventing bayonets on these carbines- someone else may know the full details of this. In a nut shell: If your SKS did not come with a bayonet you can't add one to the rifle at this point in time. The bayonet issue has NOTHING to do with the 1994 Crime Bill as it predated this legistlation. Even if the Crime Bill sunsets next year, your SKS bayonet will NOT be affected by that.

If you add a bayonet you must have proof that it was imported before the sporting use ruling.Otherwise,you end up runnung the risk of being arrested for a felony. 0 -
Ask yourself this: What do I need a bayonet FOR? Even in war, bayonets are rarely used as advertised. But, be happy: The SKS bayonet lug can be used to mount an after-market bipod. IMHO, a far more useful accessory.

Unlike the AK variations, the SKS's did not have their bayonet lugs removed after they were no longer legal. If that were the case, it would be easy to tell if your's could legally have a bayonet or not. The Russian, Yugoslavian, Albanian, and Romanian SKS's can have the bayonet due to there classification as a C&R. The Chinese ones are the problem. The Chinese SKS's are not classified as a C&R, hence they are not allowed to always have the bayonet. The standard Chinese SKS was not affected by the March 1989 Assault Weapons Ban. It wasn't until November 1990 that they were affected by amendments attached to a health bill. It was that bill that dictated that the Chinese SKS's could no longer have bayonets. Unfortunately the guns, for years, would still come with not only a bayonet lug, but a bayonet actually in the box, just waiting to be installed. Many dealers were unaware of any change in the regs, so they just attached them and/or sold them with the bayonet there in the box ready for the customer to install. The importers didn't start cutting off the bayonet lugs until 1993-1994. Then it depended on the importer.
So even if the gun has a bayonet lug on it, it doesn't mean it can have a bayonet installed. Unless you can show that it was imported prior to November 1990, you'd better not install one now. Again this applies only to the Chinese SKS's. There were a few Yugoslav ones imported prior to March 1989, but not many. The Russian, Romanian, and Albanian ones came in years later (as well as currently, including the Yugo's). They are classified differently than the Chinese SKS's.
Will anyone ever take you to task to prove that your's is legal? Doubtful, but it could happen. Additionally, the date of production of your Chinese SKS is not the determining factor, it is the date of importation. Unless you have better connections than most, finding out the exact date of importation is nearly impossible. If you have a receipt from when it was sold to your neighbor in 1987-1989, you're fine. Otherwise be cautious.

Interestingly, the Viet Cong was also known to use the SKS bayonet in this manner. It could be used as a monopod, to steady the rifle in a firing position.

That's the answer to your question, a monopod. If in doubt and to be on the safe side simply add a red rubber plug to the end of the SKS bayonet and "presto" it's a monopod to steady your firearm for sport target shooting.[;)]
