U.S. M-1 Garand

I do not know much about these rifles and wanted what to look for to see if all the parts matched the rifle? Do the parts have makers marks on them to see who manufactured them?

  Yes, most parts on the rifle will have the initials of the manufacturer, i.e. SA for Springfield Armory, HRA for Harrington & Richardson Arms, and WRA for Winchester Repeating Arms. Also, International Harvester produced Garands also.

  This is a complex question, and I could write a book explaining what to look for. Actually, there have been DOZENS of books explaining what to look for. Many small parts have drawing #s, and you need a book to know which revision is appropriate to a given rifle. Other important parts, like the stock and handguards, are identified by other markings & characteristics. The best book for the novice is "M1 Garand 1936 to 1957" by Joe Poyer & Craig Riesch.
  
  If you are looking to buy an M1, the best place to go is the Civilian Marksmanship Program (www.odcmp.com), and get a service grade rifle for $520. You have to jump through a lot of hoops, but it's worth the effort. 9 out of 10 rifles that I see in gun shops, auctions, & shows are overpriced, junk, or both. You must know what you are looking at, or you will get taken for a ride.

  Does anyone know what companies reparkerize Garands? I have an HRA with mixed parts (limited collectors value). The bore is clean and I refinished the stock but much of the parkerized finish is worn off. Since it's not a purebred I would like it to look new.

  Matt, if you would post your location we might be able to recommend a local gunsmith; parkerizing can be done well by many of them. This could save you shipping.
  
  But, if you have to ship it, consider Dean's Gun Restorations (www.dgrguns.com).

  If You Have an M1 Grand Such as my self an wish to bring it back to mil-spec. or Gi issue Quality Try these guys out ( I am going to check them out myself)
