Marlin Model 1881

What is the value of Model 1881 40 caliber in fine condition. There is no rear sight. I am trying to locate a rear sight. It has not been drilled for a scope base. Thanks

  this was the first of the marlin leveraction rifles, and is of high quality. by ".40 cal" i assume you mean the .40-60 MARLIN. 24". 28", and 30" octagonal BBL`s were standard. round BBL`s were offered, but are extremely rare. tubular mag. beneath the BBL, buckhorn style rear sight, blade front. top ejection model. they came blued, with case colored hammer, lever, and butplate. varnished walnut stock. production was about 20,540 between 1881 and 1892, but marlin records are a little vauge about the actual number made. about 9 lbs empty, 6 groove RH cocentric rifling. often refered to as " THE MARLIN REPEATING RIFLE" the standard 260gr lead bullet traveled about 1400FPS from the 26" BBL.

  a standard model (with fixed trigger plate) in NRA FINE brings about $1825.00
  yours is not the light wieght model.

  Need a lot more information in order to make an "educated" guess. Are we talking rifle or carbine? Octagon or round barrel? Amount of finish on the barrel and stocks. What type of butt plate rifle, carbine or shotgun? Any casehardening colour left on the hammer and lever? What is the condition of the bore? By .40 caliber I assume you mean the .40-82-260 cartridge. I also need the first three numbers of the serial number, fill in the other numbers with x's. Does the rifle have any special order features such as checkering? I have three of these rifles in caliber .38-55, .40-82 and .45-70.
