Difference between Sabots and Slugs

This may seem like a dumb question but my friends and I each have shotguns, smooth bore of course. What we want to know is what is the difference between sabots and slugs and what we need to do to shoot them.

  A sabot is a type of slug designed for deeper penetration than a typical solid lead slug. You can use them in any shotgun that has a barrel that is capable of handling slugs. Just make sure your shotgun has the proper barrel before you go firing slugs from it. Some barrels with certain chokes can be damaged/destroyed if you fire a slug through it.

  Typically sabots are smaller than the bore size and have the plastic sabot to make up the difference in size. Slugs are typically typical full bore size. Think of muzzleloaders... a 50 caliber rifle that shoots sabots will typically use a .44 or .45 caliber bullet whereas the typical ball size is just under .50. The same is true with shotguns.
  Think of sabots as a "sleeve" so you can shoot projectiles with smaller diameter (and by theory have a flatter trajectory).
  
  It doesn't matter what you shoot, just shoot it well...

  ..."sabot" (pronounced "sabo") comes from the French word meaning "shoe"...it is basiclly a covering to encapsulate the projectile, this later breaks away after leaving the muzzle.

  If your shot gun have screw in chokes, you can buy screw in chokes, that are rifled, to put the spin on sabot's. This will result, in a lot tighter groups, than shooting them in a smooth bore.
